This rectangular crochet placemat is fun to make and shows only the right side of the single crochet stitch. The angles from the center to the four corners give it a slight 3D-look. Choose the type of single crochet look you want to achieve and go for it. Read on for a written instruction on how to make this placemat or click on this video-link.
Single crochet stitches are versatile and the appearance can change not only by the usage of the starting loop: front, back, or both; it can also change it’s appearance by changing the leading thread’s position, as shown in this short video.
Instructions to this rectangular crochet placemat in autumn colors:
Make a slip knot and 13 chain stitches to start at the center of the rectangle.
For the first row, skip the first stitch from your crochet hook and make three single crochets in the second back loop of the chain stitches to make the first corner of the rectangle.
Continue with 10 single crochets in the individual back loops of the chain. In the last loop make 3 single crochet stitches in back loop. Turn your crochet work and make 3 sc in front loop (now back loop). This will make the corners #2 and #3.
Go on with 10 single crochets in individual loops of the chain. In the twelfth loop on this side make the forth corner with 3 single crochets and connect the row with a slip stitch into the first single crochet.
Start the second row with a chain stitch. Make three single crochets in the individual stitch for the first corner. For the long straight make 12 single crochets. Continue with three single crochets in the individual stitch for the second corner. Make 2 single crochets for the short straight. The third corner will be with another three single crochets. For the second long straight make 12 single crochets. In corner #4 make three single crochets in the individual stitch. And for the second short straight make one single crochet and connect with the first single crochet of this row.
Row #3 to #15 continue with this pattern:
start with 1 chain stitch,
for corners 3 sc in one st.,
for two long straights: basis 10 +2 sc of each row in indiv. st,
for first short straight: +2 sc of each row in indiv. st,
for last short straight: +2 sc of each row in indiv. st, but you will have one less sc then first short straight,
connect row with 1 slip stitch.
Make row #16 as previously with single crochets, and finish row #17 with slip stitches in each individual single crochet.
